Social Press is an online news magazine produced by an open community, completely free from management, advertising, and institutional filters.

Our Vision

In recent decades the media have been subject to unprecedented consolidation. Meanwhile, a radically different way of thinking about organizations has evolved.

Distributed social systems have defined a compelling new paradigm for collaboration, facilitating initiatives at seemingly impossible scales. From building encyclopedias to funding projects to world travel, communities are now delivering on visions that appeared utopian only a decade ago.

Social Press is designed to apply this new collaborative paradigm to news media. Our vision is to provide an open platform where readers and publishers work together to build a diverse, democratic, and transparent news experience.

Our Ecosystem:

Social Press is all about building news as a sustainable, supportive community.

Different members of the community have different roles, and a balance of three key groups will be necessary for a successful launch: contributors, moderators, and subscribers.

Contributors

Contributors submit their content to Social Press for publication. Their articles can be published elsewhere as well, but must be submitted by the author or publisher themselves. Those selected for publication will share the proceeds of the issue.

Moderators

Moderators visit Social Press throughout the week to democratically set the agenda for each issue. They work together to define the range of opinion for each story and curate all submitted content.

Subscribers

Subscribers purchase the final curated issue every week for their tablet. Their weekly contribution helps to support the writers chosen for publication by the community.
